Many visitors think of Florida in terms of Orlando and Disney World. But I believe that once the children have grown up you will find that South Florida has much more to offer. Here are my picks for great things to see and do in South Florida
1. The Florida Keys.
This is a magical road trip. 800 islands are strung out mostly along a causeway with clear blue ocean on either side. Great diving, snorkeling, nature parks and sites to see.
2. South Beach, Miami.
Enjoy the superb Art Deco architecture and watch all the beautiful and eccentric people, cars and buildings.
A pretty and sophisticated town on the Mexican Gulf coast. Walk along the old pier and then browse the glamorous shops in the Third Street South district.
4. Morikami Japanese Gardens
An oasis of calm and beauty. There is a museum to celebrate the lives of the many Japanese workers who came to Florida. The gardens are a delight.
5. The Everglades
Take a ride on an air boat and watch alligators in the wild.
6. Vizcaya Musuem and Gardens
A remarkable European style chateau with stunning gardens.
7. The Deering Estate
A 440 acre park and preserve on Biscayne Bay. Take a stroll around the fascinating houses and then a guided tour of the forest and its archaeological secrets.
8. Flamingo Gardens
A pleasant retreat for the family with a wonderful botanical collection and many native animal species to see including panthers, alligators, a bear and of course flamingos.
9. Palm Beach
An opulent area where it is fun to goggle at the great houses and luxurious surroundings
10. Fort Lauderdale
Hop on and off a water taxi to see the ostentatious homes of the rich and famous along the canals and waterways.
11. Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden
Take a tram ride around the largest tropical botanical garden in the USA. Savour the rain forests and wonder at the butterflies.
